Ali barely graduated from Louisville Central High in 1960 often traveling to amateur boxing matches on weekends. Ali, who later became a Muslim, first learned about the Nation of Islam, a Black Nationalist religious movement, during a trip to Chicago to participate in a Golden Gloves tournament in 1959. Ali bought a copy of the group's newspaper “Muhammad Speaks” and one of its recorded sermons. A few years later Ali would convert to Islam and gain much of his informal education from the teachings of the Nation of Islam and particularly Malcolm X who became a close friend and mentor. Vick from what we know posses far more formal education than Ali. In 1998 he graduated from Warwick High School, New Port News, Virginia and spent two years at Virginia Tech majoring in sociology. As amateur athletes both Ali and Vick were standouts in their respective sports because of their size, lighting fast speed, work ethic and confidence. But as a professional, Ali was best known as boastful, arrogant, and rude. In fact Ali was once dubbed the cocky “Louisville Lip.” In contrast, until last year when Vic gave the finger to some booing fans in his home stadium in Atlanta, people described him as considerate of others, a gentleman, kind, polite, modest, and soft spoken. We are now learning that Vic had a public side of him that attracted lucrative endorsements and fan appeal but in private he was very different person.
