Fall 1984 Syracuse Lacrosse Memories and Shaw Dining Hall

Photo of Shaw Hall where most Syracuse University athletes ate

I spent my first year at Syracuse adjusting to the school, all you could eat food and no dishes in the cafeterias, and, my new teammates. We had a very talented Syracuse team that year; time doesn’t permit me to talk about each one so I'll mention what I considered the most exceptional among a list of very good players. We had All American goalie Tom Nims (West Genesee) the father of All American attackman Kenny. In the goal, Nimmer operated like a Clint Eastwood character without the aggression. And his passing skills facilitated our fast break transition style in which defensive men and mid fields pushed the ball up field and scored goals. On defense we had big Kevin Sheehan (Baldwinsville, NY) who the team called Sheedog or just dog for short. I called him Chewie because he was so big and thick and had long hair like the star wars character Chewbaka. Kevin’s physical play, ability to dislodge the ball from an opponent’s stick, ground ball ability, and an offensive threat on occasion made him a 3 x All American. Jeff Desko (West Genesee, Camillus, NY is the youngest Desko in the program next to brother John a 79 SU All American and assistant coach during my years, and Dave a 2 x All American midfielder 83, 84) Baby D ran like a gazelle and played tremendous position defense on shifty attackman like Mac Ford (Carolina,Mt Washington,USA) and Tom Carmean (Umass, Boston Blazers, NY Saints). Jeff was a 3 x All-American. Now lets turn to how I adjusted to food at cuse. Most of us student athletes ate at Shaw Hall because it was closer to the field house than the other cafeterias and the easiest to reach following practice. People on campus interested in meeting football and basketball players also ate lunch there. These two major sports are still king of the hill despite the success of the lax program. I became close with LB Bernard King, DB Vic Bellamy, RB/WR Rodney Carter, and RB Glen Moore. Overtime people began to call us the God squad because we all became serious about our Christian faith and ate most meals together at Shaw. Because it was the unofficial athletes dining all, many of the best looking girls on campus of all ethnicity ate lunch at Shaw. I most remember grits and eggs at breakfast and fried chicken and hot dinner rolls with butter at lunch and dinner. I also recall the Belgium waffles and the ice cream. I did serious damage to the pistachio ice cream. For a junior college kid that practically starved for two years, I could not understand SU students who complained about the cafeteria food. Between the food and great looking girls, I regularly ate at Shaw Dining Hall; met my first girlfriend while eating a meal at Shaw.
