The workout that Mike Woicik created for me included free weight squats, leg curl and leg extension machines, and a lower body machine, and tons of abdominal exercises. Mike also got on me about my eating habit challenging me to be more selective in the all you can eat student cafeteria. It was in my junior year at Syracuse that took the first steps to reform my eating habits. I talk about others who took similar steps in the last chapter and epilogue of my book Hog and Hominy http://cup.columbia.edu/book/978-0-231-14638-8/hog-and-hominy/webFeatures. In addition to working with Mike, as a physical education major, I took a nutrition class and I would often read the sports science magazines in the training room on how to increase my on field performance while receiving treatment on my knees. The three points that kept coming up from Mike, the nutrition course, and the articles were: food, aerobic exercise and strength training can make a difference. It was during this period that the light went on following fall ball; I had to consume less empty calories in things like candy bars, soda, and white flour products. I made myself familiar with the salad bar and backed off the ice cream bar and late night wings and pizza. I also started spending more time riding the stationary bike in the training room to get in better cardiovascular shape. In the process I lost about 20 pounds. Finally, I became convinced that needed to work harder in the weight room. Something else happened as well that I will talk about tomorrow.
