Feeding the Revolution: The Spanish American War

As with the Revolutionary War, Cubans who fought during the Cuban War for Independence or the Spanish American War (1895-1898), also talked about the constant lack of food. However Cuban peasants played an essential role in providing the revolutionary forces with food, intelligence, and recruits, for their struggles against some 200,000 Spanish occupying troops. Rural peasant farmers contributed to rice and produce such as pineapple, mangos, yucca, yams, and plantains, livestock for meat, and dairy products such as eggs, cheese, and milk for cooking. In facts rural peasants played such an important role in feeding the revolution that Spanish officers targeted them and relocating them to Spanish military garrisons in Spanish controlled cities and towns.
