Enslaved Wedding Reception Food in the Antebellum South Part II

Strawberry rhubarb cobbler, recipes below

I started a discussion yesterday about when masters bank rolled a wedding and reception for the enslaved Africans they owned. In these cases masters brought in a white preacher and food— tables filled with roasted turkey, chickens, side dishes, pies and cakes—all elaborately prepared of course by enslaved cooks—for the reception that followed. Some masters even insisted on the first dance with the bride as if to say all assembled, I am the only authorized father here and I paid for this spread. We know that some masters hosted integrated receptions in their mansions for enslaved folks and whites. Both would eat together from a large buffet table filled with roasted turkey, chickens, pies and cakes—all prepared of course by enslaved cooks. Other receptions had enslaved blacks and freedmen eating in the yard while whites ate separately inside the Big House. In some instances the bride served as both guest of honor and server to the party held inside. Here are some fruit cobbler recipes which would be perfect for a casual summer wedding reception.
