Coconut ice cream with raspberry, recipe below
I started the tradition of picking wild berries in July with my two children about three years ago. I grew up doing that has a child in Croton-on-Hudson, New York. My son and daughter are now almost five and eight years old now and they instinctively start watching the raspberry bushes in July around where we live in the Hudson Valley eager to start picking and eating berries. My wife joined in with us this year; in the past she would have been feverously working on completing graduate school but now she has a little extra time on weekends. As people of African descent are foraging for raspberry tradition is not knew. Among commoners in pre-colonial Africa, toddlers accompanied their elders into the forest to gather berries, herbs, tubers, mushrooms, and wild greens. Thus, at a very young age, Africans from non-elite family compounds learned how to live off the land. I encourage parents to take some time and learn from specialist in your area and or from books about what you can forage in your area. Then start a healthy family tradition like picking berries which we enjoy over ice cream or in smoothies. Here is a raspberry ice cream recipe that goes well with this post:
