When I think of going back to school and food my senior year in high school I think about Mrs. Vasta’s homemade pizza at their home on Onieda street in Harmon section of my home town Croton-on-Hudson. During my senior lacrosse season at Croton Harmon High School, classmate Joe Vasta and I became very good friends. We had a mutual love for the game of lacrosse which bordered on fanatical. And as a result it brought us together both on and off the field. On Friday nights his mom made homemade pizza. When you walked into the house the heavenly smell of baking pizzas pulled you into the kitchen. Mrs. Vasta made incredible pizza! But what’s more incredible about her is that she grew up in an Irish American family in Croton. She married Joe’s dad Salvatore Vasta, a straight up hard working warm Italian American who loved his heritage and its food. Most people don’t know that Italian immigrants in places like New York and Chicago first developed U. S. Pizza culture here in the state and then it spread to Italy. Mr. Vasta must of grew up eating pizza in his home and wanted that experience as part of his own home. Mrs. Vasta understood that and learned how to cook Italian food that made her husband and nine children happy and full. Boy what an expression of love! Mrs. Vasta thank you for inviting me into your home and for the pizza on your table; it’s one of my favorite back to school food memories.
